Main Contractor: Vinci Construction UK

Value: £2.1m

Scope of Works

Waters Mass Spectrometry is a bespoke multipurpose science facility set in spacious landscape grounds on the outskirts of Wilmslow, Cheshire.

The project is a mixture of Laboratories; Offices & Meeting Rooms set over two floors. The building is split centrally by glass covered featured Atrium and the building is further complemented by a Restaurant, Gym and Warehouse facility.

The partition scope of work, some 15,000m², was predominantly British Gypsum. The partitions were developed to meet the requirements for acoustic separation and fire strategy. Within the partitions is a fusion of over 200 No. Komfort glazed screens which were also required to achieve acoustic and fire ratings. In addition the glazed screens give an extremely modern and open feel to the Offices and Atrium. This is further enhanced by eye catching timber clad ‘floating’ structural pods stretching along the meandering Atria. Fermacell Partitions and Linings were introduced to give enhanced robustness to staircases, risers and the buildings perimeter. The Atrium features strategically placed British Gypsum ‘Line 6’ plasterboard to enhance acoustic qualities.

The 14,000m² of suspended ceilings on the 1st Floor are dominated by the SAS System 330 ‘Tartan Grid Mega Panels’ & System 320 planks. The 330 & 320 systems were specifically chosen to facilitate the curvature of the building allowing us to achieve this with trapezoidal ‘C’ profile sections and planks. The Laboratories are a mixture of SAS system 120 & 130 metal tiles to achieve the client’s performance requirements. Ecophon Hygienic tiles were used in a washroom facilities and the striking Ecophon LP ceiling system was used to enhance elite areas.

A variety of coloured CEP horizontal acoustic baffles were used as a feature to the 1st floor Restaurant and white only baffles to achieve the same effect were installed in the Gym. As a key acoustic performer, but also to add further glamour, a Rockfon Monolithic Acoustic ceiling system was used in the Restaurant and the vaulted Reception area at the end of the Atrium.
